✨ DEMON LORD: JUST A BLOCK — BEST BUILDS GUIDE 2026
With 300+ abilities, 14 weapons, and 10 distinct archetypes, Demon Lord: Just a Block offers enormous build variety. This guide covers all 10 recommended builds — from beginner-friendly Invincibility Tank to the expert-level Empty Noggin challenge run. All builds have been updated for the May 1, 2026 patch.
⚙️ The Ability System Explained
After clearing each room in Demon Lord: Just a Block, you receive a selection of abilities to add to your deck. With 300+ total abilities across multiple categories (Lightning, Bomb, Summon, Defense, Soul, Card, etc.), every run produces a different ability mix — the foundation of the game's replay value.
Abilities can be merged when you have two cards of the same type. Same-type merges produce a stronger version of that ability. Different-type merges produce a Colored Ability — a hybrid card with unique combined effects. Colored Abilities are dramatically more powerful and are the primary way builds scale into the endgame.
The maximum ability count per run was raised from 99 to 199 in the May 1, 2026 patch. The Too Many Cards achievement (hold 99 abilities simultaneously) is still a significant grind but more achievable now. The Failure Expert achievement requires collecting all failure-condition scenes — pursue this as a passive grind across multiple runs.
Deck management is as important as deck building. Use Angel Rooms (Recycle/Salvation) to cull weak abilities. The April 30 patch buffed both: Recycle now discards only 1 card (down from 3) for 20 gold, making it extremely efficient for deck thinning.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best build in Demon Lord: Just a Block after the May 2026 patch?
The Chain Lightning build is the strongest overall build post-patch. The May 1 update buffed [Neverending] to fire every turn (up from every other turn) and [Focused Lightning] to +3 bolts. Combined with the Lightning Rod weapon, this build clears rooms passively and scales into Daevrak fights effectively.
How do I get 300+ abilities in one run?
The Too Many Cards achievement requires holding 99 abilities simultaneously (maximum was raised to 199 in the May 1 patch). Use the Discard Engine build approach: avoid the Angel Room, never discard voluntarily, and keep picking up every ability offered. By Chapter 5 you should have 60–80+ cards.
What is a Colored Ability and how do I create one?
Merge two abilities of different types when given the option after a room clear. The resulting Colored Ability has hybrid effects from both source types. These are consistently more powerful than same-type merges and form the core of every S-tier build.
Can I respec my build mid-run?
Not directly. However, Angel Rooms offer Recycle (discard 1 ability for 20 gold) and Salvation (discard 1 for HP). Aggressive use of these rooms lets you reshape your deck significantly over the course of a run.
What abilities does the Seven Deadly Sins run require?
You need to carry all 7 Books simultaneously: Book of Pride, Wrath, Envy, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust. Books are found in special hidden rooms and chest rooms throughout the run. Priority order: Gluttony (HP/kill sustain) → Sloth (auto-dodge every 5 turns) → Greed (gold/kill) → the remaining 4 in any order.
How does the Discard/Gain loop work?
Discard abilities remove a card from your deck and give a small bonus (gold or HP depending on the specific card). Gain abilities add new random cards to your deck. The loop works by: (1) stocking multiple Discard abilities, (2) discarding all weak cards simultaneously for large gold bonuses, then (3) using Gain abilities to refill with better cards from a pool weighted toward your current dominant type.
